Halau Hula O Kaleooka'iwa
Located in Central Florida
Hälau
Hula O Kaleooka'iwa was founded in 1993 by Kawehi
Punahele. Originally located in Clearwater,
FL, Kawehi's sole purpose was to prepare hula for
the 100th anniversary year of the overthrow of Hawai’i.
He
was called upon to present hula that was appropriate
to that era. Thus, the hälau (school) was created.
The primary goal of our hälau
is to use the art form of hula to educate...then entertain.
We seek to enrich all people; the haumana (student),
their families and our audiences. Imparting all with
the mana (spiritual power) and understanding of Hawai’i.
The hälau is dedicated to the po'e (people) of Hawaiian blood
and heart for the perpetuation of the race and the
foundation of their culture.
We are
now located in Orlando, FL; an area known for its
hospitality and cultural diversity. Here on its rich
soil, Hälau Hula O Kaleooka'iwa transplants images
of Hawai’i daily via chant, song and hula.
