Kamai Ka Ko'o and Standards My name is Christine Kealiikanula’aukamaihoehakinokeawekeanuhaili Dell Punahele. Most know me as Kamai or Mai for short. I am of Hawaiian/Scottish ancestry and have been dancing the hula for many years. Although my mother always raised me culturally Hawaiian, I was every bit the tomboy and didn’t really get involved in Hawaiiana to much. One day, my parents and I were out at the Walt Disney World Shopping Village, and I saw something that changed my life. I saw a group performing by the water. I stopped and watched them perform then turned to my mother and said “I want to do that.” I met Aunty Kau’I Brandt and found my love for hula that very day. (To continue, click here)
Keheaonalani Alaka'i 'ekahi Christine Kaheaonalani Abbey, known in the halau as Kahea, began her hula journey in Kailua-Kona, Big Island in June, 2001. Her first experience of seeing hula was mesmerizing as she watched kumu hula Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewitt and his halau performing. Inspired by the dancers' beauty, elegance and grace, she approached them after a performance and asked "Do you think I could learn to dance like that, the REAL hula?" They smiled and said yes, there were quite a few teachers of hula on the mainland. Upon returning home, it took only a few days to find kumu Kawehi Punahele of Halau Kaleooka'iwa. Kekinookalani Hopē Kekinookalani Vallesteros was born and raised in Hilo, HI. She started dancing hula when she was 7 years old with Judi's Polynesian Studio. After taking a break, she resumed dancing with Uncle Johnny Lum Ho's Halau Ka Ua Kani Lehua. Unfortunately her time with Uncle Johnny was brief. She soon moved to Oahu, met her husband Alan, and moved to Florida in 2005. It was then that she realized how much she missed dancing hula. She asked her Uncle Roy Pang who lived in Florida at that time who he would recommend as a Kumu Hula. He said that he highly recommended Kawehi Punahele.
